Mostly Bob: When Tom Corwin’s golden retriever, Bob, passed away unexpectedly, Tom decided to write a letter as a tribute to his life, which would also tell Bob’s many human friends what they might not have known — the surprising story of how Bob was once a ferocious, abused, untrusting dog named Red, and how he changed completely to become Tom’s best friend. A universal tale about the possibility of change and the power of love with no strings attached.

Food Pets Die for: Shocking Facts About Pet Food by Ann N. Martin was the first expos of the shocking practices within the pet food manufacturing industry. Since the book's publication in 1997, she has been calling attention to the dubious ingredients and methods employed by many firms. And in this updated guide, Martin continues to put pressure on the big companies to find alternatives. She suggests that if acceptable commercially prepared food is not available, food can be made at home using safe and human-quality ingredients, and she provides recipes and suggestions for supplements.

Real Food for Dogs is a recipe book. This is not a book for those who would like to make a transition to home cooking or raw food from kibbles. The author Arden Moore also states in her introduction "...Prepare these recipes once a week or for special occasions as a tasty substitute for a commercial dog food that contains a necessary balance of nutrients." Now, whether or not you buy some "good" kibbles, cook for your dog, or feed Fido raw - - I am listing this book because it really has some wonderful recipes in it. My dog especially liked the "Spinach Surprise ". One vegetable he always spits out of his food bowl. But he liked the new recipe~

My dog suffered from dry chapped nose for many years. Vets always gave me a different cream to try which treat the nose but only for the time being. Then I read in this book "Whole Health for Happy Dogs" correcting this problem may be as simple as changing the type of food or water bowl you use... I bought a new ceramic water bowl and my pup seems happier already. This is a great book with wonderful information and natural solutions for a healthier pet. It's a great gift for an owner-to-be as well. Very informative and yes, holistic!~ Read excerpt and ask question to Kim Bloomer

From Publishers Weekly
Katz, a novelist and nonfiction author (A Dog Year; Geeks), here explores the bond between dogs and their owners. Focusing on 12 people-dog relationships in Montclair, N.J., and drawing on current research into attachment theory, interviews with animal workers and psychiatrists, as well as conversations with dog owners, Katz offers nuanced portraits of what happens when humans depend on dogs to satisfy their emotional needs. He contends that high divorce rates, an unstable workplace and the shrinking extended family are some of the reasons that people have come to rely on pets instead of one another during times of crisis.....Kate's German shepherd, for example, helped her recover from her husband's death, but she gave the dog away when she remarried. In this well-written and thoughtful account, Katz makes a convincing case that dog owners must be more self-aware and responsible when they use their pets as human substitutes.
