My Name: Belle

BFF: Paul Zito

Belle was a Katrina refuge brought to Pennsylvania after the disaster. She had been in a shelter that needed to be emptied to make space for pets that were waiting for their owners return. She had been returned to that shelter 3 times and was pretty much considered a lost cause. I had been asked to foster her because she had many issues and no other foster was willing to deal with her problems. From the start I knew there was something special about her and she stole our hearts. We knew that going to another home with the possibility of being returned yet again would be devastating to her. Our family decided to adopt her so that she would never have to worry about that again. We knew we made the right decision. She is the most loving dog that we have ever had, and there have been a lot of them here.

My Name: Sophie

BFF: Leslie Jacoby

When my golden retriever died last year, I declared “that’s my last dog”. But a friend suggested considering an English Springer Spaniel and I visited the MAESSR web site. When I saw Sophie’s picture, it was love at first sight. Now the two of us are inseparable. One of Sophie’s endearing qualities is tilting back her head and “woo hooing” to express her pleasure. Sophie clears our 2 acre yard off of deer, foxes and other unwanted creatures. Also, he doesn’t let the cats scratch the furniture or fight. She is a treasured companion.

My Name: Desmond

BFF: Gwen Creighton

So this is Desmond's story: I was looking for a bull terrier. I searched Petfinder everyday. Finally one day, there he was on the website. An adorable, white bully boy...1 year old. I rushed to the city shelter and he was there, inside the chain link cage, shaking. He was terrified, his owners decided they wanted another dog so they just dropped him off at the city KILL shelter. (with all of his AKC registration papers, magazines, vet records etc...) I ran to the desk to get him out of there. When we arrived home, I waited for some problem or issue to come up. Why else would someone surrender a 1 year old TRAINED bull terrier? To this day, I have no idea. Desmond is perhaps the best dog in THE WORLD. He doesn't have any bad habits, loves kids, dogs, everything and everyone! Rescue dogs are the best!

My Name: Lacey

BFF: Mary L. Thomas

Lacey is a 16 month old rescue dog. When Lacey was 6 months old her previous owner got her pregnant for the purpose of selling her puppies (she had 4); they kept her caged outside, shaved all of her hair off, she got heartworms. The owners did not want to spend any money on her and that's when they dumped her off at our local vet in Winnsboro, SC. Fortunately our vet has a rescue program and we were lucky enough to adopt this lovely little girl. Her favorite thing to do is run free in our fenced yard – we love her very much and thankfully her hair is growing back!

My Name: Bear

BFF: Lisa Jensen

Mr. Bear dressed in his best for his first dog prom, a fund raiser for his favorite NYC dog run. It was love at first sight when I saw his profile on Chow rescue two years ago. Bear and his brother were placed in the Heart of the Catskills Humane Society in Delhi, N.Y after a house fire and were never re-claimed. Due to Bear's extreme shyness and Chow demeanor he spent 10 months at the shelter without any inquries. That all changed the instant I saw his picture. His eyes said it all; he just needed someone to understand him. Having been a previous Chow owner for 13 years, I knew in my heart this was the perfect match and rescue for me. Bear has proved to be a true gentleman of his kind!

My Name: Max

BFF: BT

My husband and I had moved from NY to VA Beach, and I didn't know a soul. I joined an animal rescue league and was volunteering. One day a doggie van pulled up. This beautiful Yellow Labrador climbed out with the saddest face I'd ever seen. I quickly asked another volunteer about him and found out that he had been kept in a garage for 4 years because he just "grew too big". I filled out an application immediately and was able to bring him home. It was amazing to see the transformation of Max's trust and faith in people. About a year later, my husband and I went through a very trying divorce and I moved back to NY with Max in tow. His loyalty and trust was unwavering and I may have rescued him initially, but he wound up rescuing me right back.

My Name: Bennie

BFF: Wanda M.

My son Dane went to Toronto Humane Society and saw Bennie in his cage. He was sitting quietly in the corner afraid of everyone. When my son put his hand thru the bars Bennie got up and started pawing at him. As soon as he did that my son KNEW he had to bring him home where he would be treated like the special boy he is. He was abused in his previous home and would cringe and hit the ground at any raised voices or overhand motions. Once we got him home and saw what a loyal loving dog he was, he became the big spoiled baby in the family.

BFF: Mindy Rohde

Spirit will get as big as the horse in the cartoon, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron! He is a purebred Landseer Newfoundland puppy. At 10 months old, he weighs over 130 pounds! We operate a rescue for giant breed dogs and he came to us in an unwanted litter. We fell in love with him and couldn't let him go! All his siblings found other good homes, though! He is our big baby and we nicknamed him "our land whale"! We love him to pieces!

My Name: Zooie

BFF: Karla Neff

My sweet boy Zooie came to me from a dog rescue at about 18 months old. He was very sick, with heartworm, hookworm, whipworm, an ear infection and buckshot in his back leg. We had all his health problems treated immediately. He quickly became my "Velcro" Dobie and followed me everywhere. He is the most gentle, calm and obedient Doberman you will ever meet. He now lives with my husband, me, our two kids and three other dog buddies. He loves playing in the backyard and going for walks but is most content just laying next to me on the couch. The BEST dogs come from rescues!!

My Name: Nora

BFF: Andrea Arden, CPDT

At 3 months old and weighing only 2 pounds, Nora was so severely under socialized she would hide her head in her paws when you held her. I had four dogs already, so I decided to foster Nora to help build her confidence until she could show herself off to potential adopters and find a forever home. Nora proved to be a spunky little girl who came out of her shell with consistent love and as a result of attending loads of puppy play groups. She found her forever home in no time flat and is now my constant companion, a certified therapy dog and makes appearances on TV and at trade shows as a shining example of the amazingly resilient and loving dogs to be found in shelters.

Here's our French Bulldog, Sully. We adopted him from French Bulldog Rescue Network when he was five months old. He was born in Hungary and imported to a New York pet store with his brother. They were purchased and turned over to rescue. He is the sweetest pup ever. He follows us around like a little shadow, wagging his whole entire back end when he's happy. He attends rescue events to raise funds and awareness for other pups in need. He is a member of our family and we love him!

My Name: ARCH Ewe Are Beyond a Shadow of a Doubt

BFF: Pamela Dennison

I adopted Shadow 6 years ago when he was 12 months old. I was told he would make a great agility dog. While that was quite true, there was a small issue of him being aggressive toward people! I had the option of returning him, however, I knew he would be euthanized. I decided to keep him and work on his issues. After only 18 months, he earned his Canine Good Citizen certificate and then went on to earn a few agility titles, a Companion Dog title and his Rally Championship title! We started working on water rescue skills this past summer and he already has his Novice Team Swim title. My website.

These are my Golden Retrievers, left: Indiana and right: Zack. Zack was adopted from an SPCA in Quebec. Zack and Indiana have been best friends since the day we adopted Zack on Feb. 7, 2003. Zack is only 4 months older than Indiana. He is a wonderful, affectionate dog. I can't believe he was surrendered to a shelter; but their loss is our gain.

My Name: Petie

BFF: Diana See my website

I spotted 'Petie' roaming the streets in a bad area. He looked skinny and grey, but extremely friendly. I called him over and he jumped in my lap and started to give me kisses. I put up signs and asked around if anyone knew him. I registered him as a lost dog at the city shelter. No one claimed him, so we tried him out with our other 2 rescue dogs 'Brownie' and 'Twinkie', and now the 3 live together and form quite the pack of very happy dogs.

  My Name: Mr. Manners

BFF: Gena L. Johnson

This is Mr. Manners, Our Yellow Lab. We adopted him from the Harrisburg Shelter, PA. He was 20 lbs under weight and had been there for 6 weeks. No one wanted this poor guy because they thought he was sick. We took him. He was unresponsive, didn't give love and didn't take it either for a while. We discovered quickly that he was completely trained, including the skill to play Frisbee!! We laid with him every day and night. He quickly learned that we were there to give him lots of love and he integrated himself into our family quite nicely. He is now a whooping 95 lbs and a big bundle of joy who loves to give kisses and follows us everywhere in the house! We felt we did a great thing for him but he has brought all of us, including our other lab much joy!!!

BFF: Lisa Smith

This is Xena, rescued out of Montreal. She was surrendered by her owner. Her history is unknown but there is one thing I do know: she is one of the greatest, and most well behaved dogs I have ever met. She lights up our lives on the most down and darkest days. She is funny, charming, has her own unique personality and if it wasn't for her, our house wouldn't be a home. She makes every day a special day. She loves to play ball, do tricks for treats or just hang out on the sofa with her 3 month old sister Chloe and her mom.

My Name: Luke Skywalker and Princess Lea

BFF: Jan Niec

They were found along the side of the road in a box with 4 of their siblings on a hot August weekend day in 2003 at approximately 10 weeks old. A kind passerby saw the puppies in the road and stopped to pick them up. Two of them had already passed away from the heat. When the lady took them home, her husband became angry and starting killing the puppies by beating them to death with a pipe. The lady got scared and grabbed two of the puppies. She ran to the neighbor asking for help. The neighbor took them to Dr. Cheryl Haas of Woodland Animal Hospital in Seymour. Luke and Lea are now our special babies.

BFF: Heather Mocain

Lucy came to us last July. She was rescued by some people who knew her previous owners. They were evicted and left Lucy outside on her chain. The people who found her said poor Lucy had dug under the trailer to survive with her 4 puppies. She was so skinny when we brought her home. We found homes for her pups. We also found out that she had acquired heartworms. She is just finishing up her treatments for the HW and is a happy healthy member of our family.

My Name: Molly

BFF: Michelle Russell

Let me introduce MOLLY. She is our beautiful 5 year old American Staffy. We first met Molly at an Animal Shelter. Molly had been severely abused, she was so thin that you could see all her ribs, her hip bone and her big brown eyes were so sad.

We decided to foster Molly, or at least try to. We weren't sure how she would find our 18 month old Rottweiler. Well it only took them a few hours and they were running around our backyard and have been best buddies since. After many lengthy discussions and consulting various dog behaviour experts, we decided to adopt our little Princess. She still has many issues, as any dog would who had been through the horror she had, but we love her. Now those big brown eyes are filled with joy to be given such a wonderful new chance at life.

BFF: Pam

7 years ago I was doing rescue for my breed club when I was notified there was a dog in the pound near me. When I arrived I noticed a small black dog that looked scared. He was coughing and was very thin. I put my hand in between the bars some how knowing he wouldn't bite me. He gently put both paws around my arm. He couldn't be adopted for another 10 days. After waiting 10 days, I went early to pay and had to wait until noon before I would know if he was mine. It was the longest 4 hours ever! I went back and he was mine :-) He loves tennis balls, agility and going to the beach!

  My Name: I-Lean

BFF: Dagny Leininger, DVM

I-Lean was a stray brought to the veterinary clinic where I worked. She was hit by a car. She never made a peep as her left rear leg was radiographed and she was treated with intravenous fluids. Sadly her leg was so severely fractured, the only option was to amputate. We waited a day with hopes that her owners would surface. Because she was such a sweet dog, I decided that I would adopt her if her owners were not found.

After her surgery, I named her I-Lean. Missing a leg never slowed her down, she loved running around in the woods and going to work with me. I-Lean lived to be 14 years old. Many people say she was lucky to have me. In reality, I was the lucky one.

-- "Hi, my name is Jane. I was adopted from Friends of the Animals in Tipton, IA. I wasn't adjusting very well at the shelter where I stayed for six months. I was afraid of the noise and the strangers who came to see me. I would urinate, belly crawl and keep my head way down. Not the best first impression for potential adopters. My mom volunteered at the shelter and she just knew that I wanted to be a good dog. She took me home to foster but after one week mom I was adopted -- I'm not a scaredy-dog any more. I'm loving and playful. Here I am with my friend Crinkle -- she's adopted too. My mom says I'm a perfect example of a diamond in the rough. My family's greatest hope is that more people will open their hearts and homes to animals like me."

BFF:Sonja L. Wilkins

-- "We are two very lucky Cattle Dogs! I am Pumba and I am the blue dog with only three legs. After being severely beaten by a drunken owner I lost my left rear leg, suffered spinal damage and have some slight neurological damage.Mum rescued me in 2005 once I had started Physical Therapy after my surgeries. It has taken a long time but I am proud to bark that I went to my first obedience class in February of 2006 and passed with flying colors! I love my life. Savannah, the cute red cattle dog with me on the bench was in the "unadoptable dog" category when my Mum brought her home in 2003. Savannah was tied out in an open back yard for her first year of life and was attacked and bullied by feral dogs who would steal her food. She hated other dogs and would attack them on sight! My Mum brought her home and then to a Dog Behaviorist and she is sweet as can be with people and other dogs now. She has also been through Ob classes, is a super tracker and knows lots of tricks... like her adorable "Curtsey".

HOW WILL THIS WORK?

You can vote for more than one dog. But -please note that when you click more than once for the same photo, system will not count the second vote. You can vote for as many dogs as you want but ONE vote a day for EACH PHOTO. I.e: You can vote for Shadow, Pumba, and Desmond. You casted 3 votes. On the same day, If you click twice for Desmond, you won't cast a 4th vote. System will not count the multiple clickings for the same dog. Just come back tomorrow and vote again. You can vote for the same dog (s) each and every day! That's how it works. Don't forget to spread the word to everyone you know! Votes will count only from different computers.

This is a voting contest. Housepetmagazine.com chose the above 24 photographs to enter this voting contest. The rest is up to the cyber public!

Due to caching, the results are not updated live, but twice daily. Please refresh your browser window to see the latest changes on the vote counts. (Hit the F5 key on your keyboard or click on the Refresh button on your browser window. If that doesn't refresh, then please clean your internet history each time or change your internet settings.)

The contest will run until March 21, 2007 AT 6PM
