MARLEY & ME

Can a dog, even a “bad” one, hold the secrets for human happiness and successful relationships? Author John Grogan believes so and convincingly makes the case with humor and poignancy in MARLEY & ME: Life and Love with the World’s Worst Dog - This mega seller, a beautifully written memoir surely stole our hearts at Housepet. NOT CANCER, BUT...

Something else? It is easy for owners to jump to the wrong conclusion and think "cancer" whenever their pets become ill. While the frequency of cancer in pets does seem to be increasing, most ill pets do not have cancer! However, any time a pet has an illness that does not respond well to treatment within four to eight weeks, the possibility of cancer must be considered. What are the clinical signs?

GLUTEN INTOLERANCE

Dr. Symes discovered that he suffered from celiac disease (gluten intolerance), in 2000. Following his remarkable recovery from a myriad of long-term symptoms, he plunged into medical research in an attempt to understand how diet changes made an effect on his chronic illness. He also discovered that his veterinary patients responded in the same fashion to this new elimination diet.

DOG DAYS OF SUMMER

Wonder where that term came from? Ancient Egyptians. Before smog, lights and construction obscured the night sky, people used to watch the stars and imagine the constellations formed pictures of common items. Among those common items were dogs. Canis Major and Canis Minor.

GETTING WASTED!

When we discover our dogs happily munching animal feces or catch a whiff of manure on a beloved pet's coat or breath, we often react more emotionally than scientifically. Rather than analyzing why the behavior occurred, most of us become consumed with the idea of brushing the animal's teeth, gums, and tongue and/or giving it a bath, ideally as quickly as possible and without retching.

INDOOR CHEMICALS

Over the last 30 years we've introduced more and more toxins in the form of cleaners and personal products. Some of the worst carcinogens are hair spray, air fresheners, window cleaners, nail polish remover, furniture polish, floor care products, liquid dish soap, bleach, and household disinfectants. These substances are not only harming us but our pets as well.

KEEP SENIORS SHARP

Dr. Thomas Graves, from U. of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana, explains that intellectual challenges for pets of all ages can be simple changes in routine. "If you always take your dog for the same walk, try a new route to a new park, even if the dog is resistant. Replace old toys. Meet new friends. Behavioral enrichment in the form of new experiences helps keep the brain active."

HOMELESS SENIORS

"Some men never seem to grow old. Always active in thought, always ready to adopt new ideas, they are never chargeable with fogyism. Satisfied, yet ever dissatisfied, settled, yet ever unsettled, they always enjoy the best of what is, and are the first to find the best of what will be." ~ William Shakespeare

Leaving Your Dog In A Parked Car Can Be Deadly
Never leave your pet unattended in a parked car for any period of time. That dash into the drugstore with your dog left in the car for just a moment could prove to be fatal to your pet. On a warm day, the temperature in a car can reach 120° F in a matter of minutes-even with the windows partially open. Your pet can quickly suffer brain damage or die from heatstroke or suffocation when trapped in high temperatures. A car’s internal temperature can accelerate up to 100 plus degrees in a couple of minutes. When it comes to larger dogs, birds and pocket pets such as ferrets and hamsters, the danger time is much shorter. You don't just expose your pet to the dangers of heat stress when you leave him in a car, you also expose him to pet theft. Thousands of pets are stolen each year from unattended cars. Taking you pet for a ride may seem like fun, but many pets prefer to spend time with you in the comfort and safety of home. Explore activities that you and your pet can share at home and avoid taking risks by leaving your pet in the car.
