GOOD BOY, ODIE!

Twenty-eight years ago, Jim Davis created Garfield, a fat tabby cat with an attittude who lives with the pet dog Odie, and and their socially inept owner Jon Arbuckle. This month, his creation arrives in theatres nationwide "Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties". Recently Jim Davis spoke with us, and we asked about Odie! Of course!

BEACH ETIQUETTE

Many dogs enjoy a day at the beach. They love the sand beneath their paws, the waves lapping and the ocean water beckoning them. It seems like a nice way to spend a summer's day. But before you get in your car and head down to your favorite beach, are you sure your favorite pooch will also be allowed? And if dogs are allowed, are they allowed to run leash-free or is the leash law enforced?

AIRLINE TRAVEL?

The Humane Society of the United States recommends that you do not transport your pet by air unless absolutely necessary. Based on reports received from pet owners, animals continue to be killed, injured, or lost on commercial flights each year. Our pets can face risks including excessively hot or cold temperatures, poor ventilation, scarcity of oxygen, and rough handling when flown in the cargo area of a plane.

INTELLIGENCE TESTS

A coworker brought in an article that ranked dog breeds based on an "IQ test" which she says proves her dog is smarter than mine. My Dufus may not be the brightest candle in the box, but can any test really prove say that one breed is smarter than another?

FOURTH OF JULY BARKS!

Shelters all over the US are filled on July 5th with lost dogs who escaped from yards and even, from inside homes. Once on the street, these distressed dogs become disoriented by the sounds of fireworks and the smell of gunpowder in the air, run for miles until there is no hope of them finding their way back home. How will you keep your dog safe and calm? There are two keys to keep your dog from becoming a July 4 statistic.

LONGEVITY OF OUR PETS

What does natural preventative care mean? I thought vaccinating, prevention medicines&premium kibble was natural preventative care. Hardly. Unfortunately the pharmaceutical companies and the pet food industry have really pulled the wool over everyone's eyes. It seems as though we barely get our pets to a "settled" place in our lives before they're gone. It doesn't have to be like this.

CANINE MASSAGE

Petting is scratching and rubbing your dog’s body and, of course it feels good to him. It may appear similar to massage, however, the impact is profoundly different. Long ago, we accepted the power of massage for helping us humans deal with stress and imbalances. We have been massaging each other for hundreds of thousands of years. Now, we are using massage to comfort and help our pet animals.

DEAF CANINES

"For perhaps, if the truth were known, we're all a little blind, a little deaf, a little handicapped, a little lonely, a little less than perfect. And if we can learn to appreciate and utilize the dog's full potentials, we will, together, make it in this life on earth." - Charlotte Schwartz

Leaving Your Dog In A Parked Car Can Be Deadly
Never leave your pet unattended in a parked car for any period of time. On a warm day, the temperature in a car can reach 120° F in a matter of minutes-even with the windows partially open. Your pet can quickly suffer brain damage or die from heatstroke or suffocation when trapped in high temperatures. A car’s internal temperature can accelerate up to 100 plus degrees in a couple of minutes. When it comes to larger dogs, birds and pocket pets such as ferrets and hamsters, the danger time is much shorter. You don't just expose your pet to the dangers of heat stress when you leave him in a car, you also expose him to pet theft. Thousands of pets are stolen each year from unattended cars. Taking you pet for a ride may seem like fun, but many pets prefer to spend time with you in the comfort and safety of home. Explore activities that you and your pet can share at home and avoid taking risks by leaving your pet in the car.
