NO ONIONS NO CHOCOLATE!

Some foods which are edible for humans, and even other species of animals, can pose hazards for dogs because of their different metabolism. Some may cause only mild upset stomachs, whereas, others can cause severe illness, and even death. The following common food items should not be fed (intentionally or unintentionally) to dogs and cats.

UNDERSTANDING LABELS:

Reading your pet food label is one of the best ways to determine the quality of the food you are feeding. The ingredients and the guaranteed analysis (amounts of protein, fat, carbohydrates, fiber, and other nutrients) are included on the food label. In addition to providing information about the amount and quality of protein and fat, the label will also alert you of any unwanted preservatives and give general feeding guidelines. By understanding this article and looking at a few pet food labels you will be able to find the best food for your pet.

UNDERSTANDING THE
INDUSTRY:

Although some dog food companies do a pretty good job at providing fairly welll-balanced nutrition for the average dog, there are some conflicting issues that make many brands subject to scrutiny before one walks into a pet store and picks up just "any 'ole food."Following is a report that explores the differences between what consumers think they are buying and what they are actually getting.

ARE U A PACK LEADER?

Any group of people and dogs residing in a house will result in the formation of a pack. A pecking order will naturally establish itself, the bossiest and most persistent usually ending up as a pack leader. The dogs see their position simply as "we are one pack united", humans tend to think "we are one family and a few dogs". This difference of opinion causes confusion and sometimes disharmony. Many humans cannot see that the dogs' pecking order is closely integrated with their own.

POISONOUS PLANTS

House plants provide us with beauty and enjoyment, but some can also cause major problems for your pets. According to Dr. William Buck, "a lot of ornamental plants have irritating sap that will cause an animal to vomit and have diarrhea." He says that plants like the hibiscus and those in the Easter lily family, which are not toxic to people, may be very harmful to pets.

Protecting Your Dog and Puppy-Proofing The House
If anything is in reach, your puppy will sniff, chew, and probably play with it. So to protect your puppy in her new environment, and to safeguard your belongings, puppy-proof your house. Never leave your puppy home alone with her collar on the neck as it can get caught on anything resulting injury or even death • Be careful about corded shades and draperies as puppies easily entangle themselves playing with cords • Place dangling wires from lamps, VCRs, stereos, TVs, and phones up and out of chewing reach • Move plants out of reach (some houseplants are poisonous to animals) • Keep toilet lids closed to prevent drowning and/or developing bad habits • Use childproof latches to keep curious muzzles from prying open cabinets • Keep medications, cleaners, chemicals, and laundry supplies on high shelves • Keep laundry and shoes behind closed doors (drawstrings and buttons can cause major problems) • Keep any medications, lotions, or cosmetics off accessible surfaces (like the bedside table which can be reached by jumping on the bed) • Clean up all antifreeze from the floor and driveway--one lick of most antifreezes can be lethal to a puppy.
